Dewberry, it's quite possible that the seeds were old. They self-seed readily in the garden, if you let them. Thank you for visiting! Lovely to see you. :)
Where did you get the seed from? They look very unusually. Would like to try and as you are in Adelaide and I'm in Perth...may have a chance with them.
The berries taste a bit like hazelnut, in my opinion.
It's just a great plant to have in the garden. Very easy to grow, too.
